Modern waterbed design is a far cry from earlier models. These days it is possible to get waveless waterbed mattress or motionless waterbeds, semi waveless waterbed mattresses and all manner of wave reduced waterbed mattresses in sizes ranging from super single to kingsize. Older designs had a tendency to produce bladders that produced a wavy motion when you got onto them.

The older designs utilized a free flow bladder – a simple bag of water. You can imagine sitting on a huge bag of water, shifting your weight around will just cause waves and ripples under your body.

Initially these free flow bag insert designs held great attraction for some people based on novelty alone and during the 1970’s free flow waterbeds became a fad or novelty must have. As with many fads the zenith passed but water beds continue and the technology incorporated into them has moved on significantly since the 1970’s.

After the initial novelty factor of a wavy bed had worn off many people came to realise that the free flow bag design wasn’t much cop and could produce nausea and dizzying effects. As a result, development of waveless waterbed mattresses  and motionless bladders took place that retained the best properties of waterbeds but eliminated or reduced the uncomfortable wave motion.

A motionless waveless waterbed mattress is achieved through a number of design modifications to the original free flow bag.

One method of reducing the waves has been to incorporate a fiber layer into the free flow bladder. Essentially a fiber sheet floats within the insert. The fiber sheet dampens ripples and waves without destroying the best features of a water bed such as support and body contouring. Some bladders contain numerous layers, some just one layer altereing the amount of waves you may get. The thicker and more numerous the dampening layers the less wave motion you are likely to encounter.

A further construction method to reduce waves and ripples is the baffled bladder. In these designs the bladder is no longer a simple bag but rather a bag of various compartments of different sizes and shapes. In many designs a honeycomb set of chambers forms the inner areas of the bladder. These baffle structures make for a firmer and more stable bladder by dampening the movement of water through the bed.

In some designs both the baffled bladder and dampening sheet are used in conjunction to reduce waves and ripples. As a result of these technologies water bed mattresses can offer a wide range of rides from firm to soft. This means modern beds can have wider appeal than their counterparts of the 1970’s boom period.

Some people still prefer the original full wave motion of a free flow bladder but for others waveless and motionless technology can produce a bed with all the health benefits of the original waterbed and none of the nausea. Its all down to personal preference whether you choose a wave reduced or waveless waterbed mattress or free flow bladder, now there are so many on the market even the amount of motion can be defined with beds that are fully reduced or semi reduced often differentiated by a percentage score.
