When it comes to best waterbed frames you have got a few choices to make. Do you go for a hardside waterbed or a soft side? A hardside bed is a fully framed bed that sits on a pedestal.

Essentially the mattress and liner sit within the frame and the mattress and frame are raised off ground level by a pedestal. A softside looks rather more like a standard bed. The water filled mattress is housed with a foamed/quilted cover which offers support, the entire bladder and cover are then placed on a pedestal as a normal mattress would be placed on a standard bed pedestal unlike a hardside there is no exterior framing on view.

The classic hardside waterbed frame is generally constructed from timber which, naturally, offers a variety of finishes and color schemes. They fit very well with traditional bedroom furniture although frames constructed from pine timbers are often neutral enough to feature with any color scheme or style. Alternately they may sometimes be covered with padded vinyl, leather, or fabrics allowing them to accommodate a wide range of bedroom fashions and tastes.

Hardside frames generally come in three sizes all of which are a little larger than standard bed sizes. The largest common size is the Californian King (75”Wx87”L), the next size down is the Californian queen (63”Wx87”L) and the smallest tends to be the Super Single (51”Wx87”L). Padded rails will add a couple of inches to widths and lengths. Pedestals usually come complete with storage draws to make use of the space beneath the frame, but check with individual manufacturers for specifics as they can vary.

A hardside waterbed can be kitted out with a wide range of bladders or mattresses depending on your comfort requirements. There are plenty of suppliers who offer traditional full bladders or dual bladders allowing for individual heat and comfort settings whilst avoiding sag and roll together issues. As well as mattress size you also have a choice of waveless, semi-waveless or full wave free flow mattresses making a hardside bed a good choice of frame type.

The adventurous amongst you may have ambitions to design and construct your own frame for a hardside waterbed. This can be a challenge but for the practical amateur it is an achievable challenge that doesn’t require a vast amount of cabinet making skills.
